Parfum
- Eau de parfum is the most popular form of perfume on the market today. It contains between seven and fourteen percent fragrance oils. About thirty percent of the fragrance that you first spray on will be lost in a few hours, but the remaining seventy percent will last about twenty four hours. If you are looking for a perfume that holds its scent for long periods of time, then this is the perfume for you.
- Esprit de parfum is the least concentrated of all of the perfumes largely used by women. It is however, slightly stronger than eau de toilet. Esprit de parfum is made using the same methods as perfume, accept it is more diluted and the scent is not strong, but lasts a long time.
- Musk was given its name because it originally got its scent from the musk deer. The deer would be killed and its gland removed. They would then dry the gland in the sun, hot rock, or in hot oil. Similar scents used to make musk can be found in the musk ox, musk rat, musk duck, musk wood of the guianas and several other animals. The grain of musk will scent millions of cubic feet of air without losing very much weight. Musk has a very strong and pleasant scent, and is used in a lot of perfumes as well.
- Cologne is approximately five percent essential oils, which is a much smaller ratio than the more expensive perfume which has approximately twenty too forty percent.
- Eau de cologne In its original recipe it contained water, alcohol and the oils of bergamot, lemon, orange and orange blossom, with the addition of lavender oil and rosemary oil. Today it is also made using synthetic scents. It is one of the only perfumes that is widely used by men. Eau de cologne has the least concentrated scent of all of the perfumes.
- Eau de toilet is slightly stronger than eau de cologne, but is still a very light scented type of perfume.
Types of scents

- Floral – most perfumes are created by flowers and this is a highly popular scent. Flowers used to create floral smell range from roses, gardenia, carnations, jasmine and orange blossoms. Sometimes these are blended together to create a floral bouquet.
- Oriental- this is a good scent for the winter due to its strong musky nature it is a mixture of spices, amber, balsams and resins
- Citrus- these are soft subtle fragrances that are best when used in the summer time. The scents derive from citrus fruits, like lemon, limes, tangerine and mandarins
- Chypre- inspired by the island of Cyprus where the founder inhaled scents and thus created Chypre. This is a woodsy-mossy mix that also has hints of bergamont, oak, moss, citrus and other earthy aromas
- Green- when you think green, think of grassy, pine, leaves or anything you may find in a forest. This is a great scent for the athletic type.
- Fougere- is a strong scent mostly used by men, but women also love this smell. It is a combination of fresh herbs and mossy substances.
Even though there are six major types of scents that make up perfume, there are other types of scents that are just as pleasant such as:
- Oceanic- which are synthetic perfumes that emulate scents of the ocean and it’ surroundings
- Fruity- sets off a spicy and fresh scent as well as a fruity smell. This is a great scent for the summer time.
- Woody Scents- think forest when you think of woody scents; these scents derive from bark, moss and other things you would find in a forest.
So when choosing a scent, it is best to splash a dab or two on your wrist to see if you like the way it reacts with your natural body chemicals and to see if it likes the smell it creates.
Some people like different kinds of fragrances, and some people can show versatility by trying different types of fragrances and wearing some fragrances that go with the seasons. That would be a cost effective way to save cash as well as preserver your best selling perfume for months or sometime even years by mixing up the perfumes you wear on a daily or seasonal basis.

Perfume Notes
When people talk about perfume notes,
they are referring to the rate at which scents unfold
themselves to your nose. There are three core notes that a person can smell at
different times of the application: top notes, middle notes and base notes.
When smelling perfume try doing your testing in the afternoon,
this is when your nose is at its peak and will be able
to distinguish more scents within notes easier.
Top Notes : Top notes are the first notes smelt after the initial spray.
They usually smell of alcohol, if just sprayed out of a bottle.
Once you get used to the alcohol smell you will be able to smell
the light top notes that most people rely on to purchase perfume.
Middle Notes : Middle notes are the scents that arise when the top notes
are no longer at their strongest. Also known as heart notes,
these scents mix with the base notes to make
the heart of what the perfume really is.
Base Notes : Base notes are usually smelt after your body warms up
to the perfume. This can take anywhere between thirty minutes
to an hour. The base notes and the middle notes combine to create
a harmony of strong scents and mild scents.
So that a medley of scents makes up a perfume. To give a perfume
a real chance, actually spray the perfume on your inner elbow and
wait for your body to naturally warm and interact
with the fragrance. By that time you will be able to smell
the base and middle notes together as well as the reaction of the perfume
and your body's own scent. This is the best way to test perfume
for purchase, rather than from the initial spray.
